The villages of Madobak, Ugai and Matotonan are not actually designed for tourist destinations, but their traditional culture and life are very sustainable and unique, making this village attract tourists.
Located on the southern Siberut river. To reach this village start from Muara Siberut, you have to take route Purou-Muntei-Rokdok-Madobak-Ugai-Butui-Matotonan. Each village has its own unique culture.
Madobak, for example, is famous for the cool Kulu Kubuk waterfall. This waterfall has two levels with a height of 70 meters. Each village is also famous for its traditional house, locally known as Uma, and its traditional ceremony performed by Sikerei or Shaman.
These traditional ceremonies are usually staged during the wedding and enter a new home, the goal is to cast out evil spirits. Shamans in these three villages still faithfully wear panties and headbands (Luat) made of colorful beads.
Some locals still have Mentawai traditional tattoos made from sugar cane and coconut charcoal. This tattoo is made by using nails and needles and two pieces of wood as pads and hammers. According to local residents, the process of making this tattoo is very painful.
Get around
Visiting these three villages is an amazing experience. Their natural life can be seen from Uma's wooden houses, sago processed into their staples, motorboats on the banks of the river and their diverse local cultures.
In this countryside, people use wood for cooking. Seeing residents take sago with their buckets is an exciting activity to behold.
In addition to visiting Kulu Kubuk waterfalls in Madobak village or border area of Siberut National Park in Matotonan village, visitors can interact with the daily life of local people and participate in their traditional ceremonies.
Transportation
You can visit this countryside through the Rereget River. This river is the path to the upper reaches of the coast at Muara Siberut. With about 3 hours to get to Madobak, 4 hours to Ugai and five or 6 hours to Mototona by boat.
During the peak season, travel time will be a little short. You are advised to use a small motor boat known as a pompong.
The distance between Muara Siberut and Matotonan, is the most remote village, about 40 km. Unfortunately, the Rereget River is tortuous and uphill. You can see sago trees on both sides of the river.
To visit Muara Siberut from the arrival gate at Minangkabau International Airport, West Sumatera, visitors must go to the port of Muara Padang by bus. From there, visitors use motor boats to cross the Indian Ocean to Siberut Island.
The schedule of the boat from Padang to Siberut only twice a week ie Sunday night (ships Sumber Rezeki Baru) and Thursday night (ship Simasin) this trip about one day means ship back to Padang on Tuesday and Friday night. Ticket prices Rp 105.000 to Rp 125,000.
In addition, there are additional vessels operating in the first and second weeks of each month. The Ambu-Ambu ship departs on Saturday night from Muara Padang and returns from Siberut to Padang on Sunday night.
